Working Ice Skating

The ice-skating rink is 15 X 30 metres long and it has an entry and an exit gate.

Line #1- For Unattended Skaters
Line #2 – For Skaters with Skating Aid.

Skating Flow

This year the work flow has been modified to improve the patron flow from collecting the skates, putting them on and then getting to the entry gate and onto the rink.

Staff in the Rink Area

• 1-2 staff at Skate’s Collection,
• 2-4 Skating Attendants on the Ice,
• 1 Attendant at the Entry Door,
• 1 Covid-19 Marshal to Direct Patrons and Manage Crowd Congestion.

Skate Collection

Your role is to assist patrons collect the skate for their self and some time the whole family. The skates will be organised by size so they can be easily and quickly found to give to the patrons. There is a size chart to help you identify the skate sizes for the patrons.

There are two types of ice skates:

  • Strap on for children to wear over their shoes, and
  • Fully enclosed skates that require socks. Socks can be purchased from you at the services desk.
Getting onto the Rink

There will be 2 lines:

Line #1: For skaters who can skate unattended (priority lane).
Line #2: For skaters needing a skating aid (may have to wait for availability).

There are 50 skating aids available, and the staff member at the entry gate is responsible for directing patrons into the appropriate lines and communicating the rink rules along with important safety directions.

There are 30 skating aids available.

The staff member who has been assigned to be the “entry gate” attendant is in charge of directing these patrons into the lines. It is also your responsibility to go over the rules of the rink and verbally direct the patrons with some important safety directions.

Rules of the Rink

01. All person’s skate at their own risk.
02. Do not skate if you are pregnant.
03. Do not skate if you have existing health condition.
04. Children under 5 years must be accompanied at all times.
05. If you fall over you must pull your fingers in.
06. You must wear socks while skating.
07. All Patrons must wear ice skates on the ice at all times.
08. Please skate in anti clockwise direction.
09. No Pushing.
10. No Speed or dangerous skating.
11. All skaters should be aware of other skaters & maintain the speed of all skaters.
12. No carrying of children on the ice.
13. No chasing or playing tag on the ice.
14. No throwing or spraying of ice.
15. No digging holes or damaging of the ice or barriers.
16. No sitting on the barriers.
17. No Bare Feet.
18. No Food, No Drinks, No Texting, No Smoking.
19. No phones or Video Games to be used whilst on the ice.
20. No offensive or abusive language.
21. Please be courteous and respectful of all patrons and staff.
22. If the ice surface is uneven or wet depending caution must be exercised.
23. Do not leave valuables un-attended.
24. A change of clothes is recommended.

Important points to tell the patrons verbally in addition to pointing out the rules of the rink:

• When entering the rink start to skate in an anti-clock wise direction.
• Keep a normal speed in conjunction with other skaters
• If you fall over, pull your fingers in to avoid be run over by other skaters.

Skating Attendants

Your role on the rink is to assist patrons ice skate and to minimise incidents on the rink. You will need to return skating aids to the entry gate ready for new skaters to enter.

If a patron losses balance and falls over you must attend to them immediately and see if they are ok. If they are hurt, depending on the circumstance and they can return to the seating are, you can assist them back to this area and then call for first aid if required.

If they have a serious injury and do not feel like they can move to the seating area, then radio for first aid to attend on the ice. If there are any wet patches on the rink you must make sure that the traffic cones are in place to avoid this area being used. You may at times need to assist patrons leaving the rink via the exit gate.

Patrons will exit via the exit gates and then walk back to the area they left their shoes to remove skates and put their shoes back on. You may need to assist patrons by returning the skates to the skate service desk to assist to get patrons out of this are as quickly as possible.

Ice Rink Check List 

All staff are to read and understand the rules of the rink and the terms and conditions of the Ice skating. You must conduct a visual and manual daily inspection of the rink including but not limited to:

1. Entry and exit areas.
2. Fences.
3. Condition of the ice.
4. Sharp edges.
5. Tripping hazards.
6. Rubbish and debris.
7. Functionality of the chiller.
8. Excess water on the rink.
9. Condition of skates.
10. Functionality of skating aids.
11. Cleanliness of the kiosk area and absence of hazards.
12. Condition of all electrical equipment.
13. Cleanliness and proper setup of seating.
14. Absence of rubbish or hazards in the seating area.
